Season’s Greetings
December 20, 2011

Here are some snapshots from the exhibition Two Views: Contemporary Landscape Photography currently on view at the Cleveland Museum of Art. My photograph Jake & Maggie was accepted into the permanent collection last year. Today it's hanging on the wall next to a Lee Friedlander photograph.

In 1982 I received a Nikon FG as a gift. It was my first 35mm camera.
Three years later I began classes at Rochester Institute of Technology. While a student at RIT, I cultivated a strong understanding of materials and processes regarding the nature of photography and developed a personal commitment to excellence concerning the fabrication of photographs.
In the summer of 1989 I graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Photography, moved to New York City, and practiced fashion/commercial photography. After five years working within the NYC photo biz, I relocated to the Midwest, where I focused my work on combining technical know-how with fine art sensibilities and concentrated on making art as well as teaching.
Since 1996 I have taught photography classes at Oberlin College, Baldwin-Wallace College, and University of Akron's Myers School of Art where I was ranked in the top five percentile of student evaluations university-wide. I drew much inspiration from my students and decided to pursue a Master of Fine Arts degree at Vermont College of Fine Arts, which I received in 2005. Working with world-renowned artists/theorists at VCFA cultivated my curiosity, challenged my praxis and supported my theoretical aspirations within my photographic, video, and time-based media work.
In addition to teaching, I have been exhibiting my work from Prague to San Jose and have been fortunate enough to be included in numerous private, institutional, and museum collections including Cleveland Museum of Art, Columbus Museum of Art, and the Progressive Art Collection.
The Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland featured one of my solo exhibitions Eric Rippert: Midwest Tableaux and the Cleveland Museum of Art recently pulled my work from its permanent collect for the exhibition Two Views: Contemporary Landscape Photography. The Columbus Museum of Art selected my work for the exhibition The View From Here: Recent Pictures from Central Europe and the American Midwest that traveled to seven cities internationally. Other venues where I have exhibited work include Minnesota Center for Photography, Minneapolis, MN; Legion Arts, Cedar Rapids, IA; Detroit Artists Market, Detroit, MI; Erie Art Museum, Erie, PA; Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center, Buffalo, NY; Ludwig Museum, Budapest, Hungary; and City Gallery, Prague, Czech Republic.
